With heavy hearts and extreme sadness, we report the passing of New Jersey Transit Police Detective Alexis Melendez.

During his early career, Melendez was assigned to NJTPD Patrol District 2 in Newark. His outstanding police work shined, and he was later assigned to a plain clothes capacity. As a plain clothes officer, Melendez helped to protect your travels as he blended amongst the traveling public. The countless actions he took, always served to ensure your safety.
In 2012, Melendez was assigned to the DEA Task Force. There, he helped to reduce the supply of illegal drugs and deterred drug related violence and criminal activity. The department was proud to appoint Melendez to the position of Detective in April 2021. Despite Detective Melendez’s DEA assignment, protecting the traveling public remained his area of expertise. He continuously deployed to help us protect mass travel events including NFL games, concerts, and more throughout the system.
At our department, Melendez will be remembered for his hard work and dedication, his cheerful demeanor, and his deep laugh. No matter the assignment or detail, Detective Melendez’s presence was always an asset.
Today, our broken hearts are with Detective Melendez’s family. Please keep his family as well as our NJTPD family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in eternal peace Detective Melendez. We thank you for your service. – NJTPD
