1983-1985
OPERATION
January 1983 - NJ TRANSIT Police Department begins operations.

TRANSFORMATION
1984 - NJTPD assumed patrol duties at Newark Penn Station after Amtrak transferred control of the station to NJ TRANSIT.



THE BIRTH OF TRAIN PATROL
On August 24th 1984, New Jersey Transit hosted the farewell to their Lackawanna MU cars, which at the time of their last run were the oldest cars operating in New Jersey.
1985 - Train Patrol Unit launched; Railroad Police merge with Security Special Investigations Unit handling Internal Investigations for Corporate, Rail and Bus Operations, and appointed its first Chief of Police.

1990-1993
NEW HQ LOCATION, AND NEW RETIREMENT SYSTEM.
New police headquarters and communications center open in Maplewood.

1990 - Police Department was granted sworn status, given full police powers to handle traffic and criminal matters anywhere in New Jersey. State Legislature approves transfer of sworn police personnel from Railroad Retirement System to Police and Fire.


1992 - New police headquarters and communications center open in Maplewood.

1993 - NJ Transit Police Officers are pictured during police week in Washington D.C. 1993. The officers were in our Nation’s Capital for memorial services. Police Week remains an important time to honor and remember fallen law enforcement officers.

1995
POPE JOHN PAUL II
1995 - On October 5th 1995 Pope John Paul II visited The old Giants Stadium now known as the MetLife Stadium. New Jersey Transit Police and our partner agencies: local, state, and federal, managed and protected the travel of numerous crowds and traffic control for events in the state.

1999

FARE ENFORCEMENT
1999 - Established Fare Enforcement Unit for Light Rail systems.

2001-2003
911
2001 - During 9/11/2001 NJTPD officers assisted as commuters evacuated from NYC, and provided comfort and continued security to travelers throughout the system.


NEW COMMANDS
2003 - Two additional commands open (Trenton District 5 and Secaucus District 4).
2004
NEW HQ AND CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
2004 - New headquarters and Central Communications Center opens at our headquarters building in Newark.


2005
JUSTICE TEAM/HAZMAT
2005 - JUSTICE Team and Haz-Mat team are formed.

2008
NATIONAL INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
2008 - National Incident Management System training to meet requirements of Homeland Security Presidential Order #5 and Governor's Executive Order #50.

2010-2012
CONDITIONS TACTICAL UNIT
2010/11 - Federally funded counter-terror positions added. The Conditions Tactical Unit became apart of Emergency Services Unit at a later date.
INTELLIGENCE UNIT
2011 - Intelligence Unit is formed. The Intelligence Unit was created by Chief Trucillo in May of 2011. This unit supports both counter terrorism and crime prevention/suppression missions.
FORMATION OF ESU
2011 - JUSTICE Team adds capabilities and equipment; becomes full-time Emergency Services Unit (ESU).
FRAUD UNIT
2012 - Fraud Unit formed under the Investigations Bureau to combat all financial fraud against NJT.

2014
FEBRUARY 2ND SUPER BOWL XLVIII
2014 - NJTPD played a significant role in the security operations in 2014 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium. NJTPD coordinated a joint operation with NJSP, FBI, Port Authority PD, NYPD, and DHS.

2015
POPE FRANCIS VISIT
2015 - NJ experienced significant traffic impacts and NJTPD assisted with implementing special transportation plans. Even though Pope Francis visited New York and Philadelphia, New Jersey was impacted and NJTPD assisted with creating regular posts giving traffic and commuting updates for the commuting public.
2020
COVID-19 (INTEL)
2020 - Responding to the challenge of Covid-19 the Intelligence Unit strengthened their culture of information sharing and real-time communication with local, state, and federal agencies. This was critical for the protection of the commuting public and NJT employees. This allowed for quick identification of emerging threats, health threats, public alarms and overall operational impacts. The Intelligence Unit has since expanded the use of advanced technology putting emphasis on social medial and digital analysis, giving them the ability to track trends, detect misinformation, and maintain proactive posture.
2024
EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER
2024 - NJTPD Honored Inspector Noble by dedicating the Emergency Operations Center in his name.
On Friday, May 10th, 2024, NJTPD Chief Christopher Trucillo joined NJ TRANSIT CEO Kevin Corbett and family members of the late Inspector Robert L. Noble to dedicate the agency's Emergency Operations Center in his memory.

NEW EQUIPMENT/TECH
ESU has added new tech and equipment, giving enhanced capabilities such as High Water Rescue trucks, upgraded SCBA gear for Hazmat and fire rescue (Gas, Powder, Liquids).

NJTPD HQ moves to new location. (283-299 Market Street, 6th Floor Newark, NJ)
