Captain of Districts 5,6,7
Captain Matthew Coyle is the Commanding Officer of Transit Districts 5, 6 and 7 in Trenton, Camden and Atlantic City for the NJ TRANSIT Police Department. He directs and controls all daily Police Operations for these locations.
Captain Coyle joined the NJ Transit Police Department in 2003. Throughout his career he has held various roles, including Patrol Officer, Emergency Services Unit Officer, Training Unit Officer, Training Unit Supervisor, Rangemaster, Policy and Special Events Coordinator, Executive Officer of Administration, Tour Commander of Transit Districts 3 and 4, Tour Commander of Transit District 2, Executive Officer of Transit District 2, and Captain of Administration. In 2025, Captain Coyle was assigned as the Commanding Officer of Transit Districts 5, 6, and 7 in Trenton, Camden, and Atlantic City.
Captain Coyle was promoted to Sergeant in 2009, Lieutenant in 2012, and Captain in 2024. Captain Coyle holds a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from Rutgers University, and a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Training and Development from Seton Hall University.
Captain Coyle is the recipient of the Excellent Police Service Award and the Lifesaving Award.
Captain Coyle is a graduate of the Essex County Police Academy, Class 2003-1P where he was the recipient of the Firearms and Merit Awards. He is also a graduate of the New Jersey State Association of Chief of Police’s Command and Leadership Program.
Captain Coyle is a founding member and bagpiper for the New Jersey Transit Police Pipe Band.
